Mariners use off-day for a good cause

Days off in between home games are rare for Major League baseball players, so on Monday several Mariners players used one of those off-days as an opportunity to raise money for cystic fibrosis research.

Sandberg: Sosa doesn't belong in Hall

Ryne Sandberg, who played his way into the Hall of Fame alongside Sammy Sosa, says his former Cubs teammate does not belong in Cooperstown.

[...] "For a guy who's tested positive today under what happens now like Manny Ramirez, it almost takes an idiot to participate in that. For the society, for the up-and-coming players and youth out there, I don't think those guys should be recognized at all."

Obama to throw out first All-Star pitch

Obama will be the fourth U.S. president to throw out the first pitch in the Midsummer Classic -- joining John F. Kennedy (1962), Richard Nixon ('70) and Gerald Ford ('76) -- and will be the seventh president to attend an All-Star Game. The first to attend an All-Star Game was Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1937.

No-call looms large in Atlanta's loss

Instead of interference called on Robinson Cano in the eighth, a throwing error was charged to Braves catcher Brian McCann, leading to one Yankees run and possibly changing the outcome of the game.

Ich liebe Baseball. :-D

Broken bat nearly impales Green

Infielders are taught from the beginning of their baseball existence to keep their eye on the ball until it gets into the glove.

Beckham's walk-off caps Sox thriller

Saturday's 8-7 victory over the Cubs was somewhat akin to watching an entertaining but not particularly well-made movie for three hours, leading up to a spine-tingling ending that will be talked about for weeks on end.

Paul Konerko:
"These games, we were just talking about it, it's amazing how this rivalry is so dead even, not only in the actual wins and losses, but the games are so close," Konerko said. "There are not too many games that are more than a couple of runs apart."

Gordon Beckham:
"Everyone is a little drained," Beckham said. "That was such an intense game, back and forth. They kept fighting, we kept fighting. We came out on top, so it was good."

Not so fast: Wolf, Martin lose track of outs

Randy Wolf tossed a 68-mph curveball past the bat of a guessing Chris Iannetta for strike three and the third inning was seemingly over on Monday. But there was just one problem -- it was just the second out of the inning.

Cardinals sign touted Dominican teen

The Cardinals continued their recent push into Latin America with a major signing on Thursday, as they announced a deal with 16-year-old Dominican outfielder Wagner Mateo.

[...] According to multiple reports, he will receive a bonus of $3.1 million. That would be the second-largest bonus ever paid to a Latin American free agent, and the largest to a hitter, trailing only the $4.25 million the A's gave pitcher Michael Ynoa last year.

Das ist Wahnsinn. 3 Millionen als "Zulage" für einen Sechzehnjährigen? :|

Jason Kidd anyone? %)

Giants' Sanchez fires first no-no of '09

Jonathan Sanchez, who was demoted from the starting rotation two weeks ago, returned with a flourish by pitching a no-hitter in San Francisco's 8-0 victory Friday night over the San Diego Padres.

Slick Posada sheds Figgins, then glove

Who needs a catcher's mitt to put away a routine popup? Not Jorge Posada. The veteran Yankees backstop made a rather unorthodox putout in the bottom of the seventh inning of New York's 10-6 loss to the Angels on Friday, when Chone Figgins put a high foul into the air behind home plate.

Kurioses Aus. :haeh: =)

Odd error caps frustrating loss for Astros

Mike Hampton's sixth-inning gaffe capped a disappointing night for the Astros, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped in a 5-2 loss to the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
